Ke$ha, one of the presenters at this year’s Video Music Awards on Sept. 12, always seems to catch us off-guard with her fashion choices. Whether she’s lathering her whole body in glitter, painting stripes of blue across her face (and lips), or going out in public with animal masks on, this girl isn’t afraid to throw on whatever she wants. But, when MTV Style caught up with her recently, she revealed that everything she does is pretty calculated. Plus, Ke$ha reveals her entire beauty routine, like what happens after she wakes up in the morning feeling like P. Diddy.

“Right before I go on stage, I lather my body in baby oil and cover my entire body with a shield of glitter. Because it just pops! It just looks great! It’s really hard to get the glitter off. I’ve just given up. I’ve accepted that it will just be there. It’s in all my suitcases, it’s usually in my food, in my drinks. Sometimes when I pee, it’s in the toilet, I don’t know how it got there.”

“I like digging through thrift stores and sometimes the garbage — yes it’s true! — sometimes the garbage. It’s not like I’m going to go into the garbage with crusty food on it, all garbage is not equal. But if I see a pile of pretty sweet-looking shirts laying on the ground, yeah I’ll dig through it! In my fantasy world, I would just wear headdresses and run around in body paint and a glitter diaper and that’s it. And because I can’t run around topless, I just put on the coolest shirt I can find.”

“At a part in my show there’s some audio that’s saying, ‘I’m the dance commander, and I’m commanding you to dance, dance, dance.’ And I think this [a feather vest] helps accentuate that I am in fact the Dance Commander. These are diapers [holding up gold sequin underwear]. They’re not really diapers, and that’s really not sexy. But this is where the magic happens, is in these puppies. You put these on and then it’s party time.”

“I’m not like one of those chicks that really cares. I could literally just wear whatever, I’m not picky and I think that’s the beauty of my style. I can kind of make anything look cool if you just tie it up or rip it or pin or safety pin it or put glitter on it.”

Guys, we did it. We interviewed Ke$ha for our fabulous fashion franchise, Head to Toe, and holy yak horn necklace, did she deliver. Did she say she likes to dress like “a sexy pirate?” Yes. Did she explain to us that she gathered – not plucked! – feathers for her earrings? Yes. Did she diss her ex-boyfriend? Totes yes. And we love her a wee bit more for it.

Last year, Ke$ha tells me, “I was opening for somebody who was opening for Mickey Avalon.” Now, the 23-year-old singer born Kesha Rose Sebert opens for Rihanna. The tour follows Ke$ha’s chart-topping debut album, Animal, and her single “TiK ToK,” one of the most ubiquitous tunes of summer ’10.

The press packet your publicist sent me is the thickest I’ve seen—and it’s almost entirely articles written just this year.
The American media has no idea what to do with me. Some of the articles pigeonhole me as just one thing, a drunk or a party girl. Some people get the joke, and some people don’t.

What’s the joke?
The joke is, like, maybe I’m being ironic and there’s a bit of being an idiot for the sake of having fun with it, you know?

Almost every article recounts the same few stories about your life.
I’m an honest person, I grew up with a very honest mother, listening to very honest music. In pop music, it’s not as accepted, I guess, to be so honest.

But given that we see the same anecdotes over and over—breaking into Prince’s home to hand him your demo, throwing up in Paris Hilton’s closet—do you use them to inform the media’s depiction of you?
Um, like, I just told these stories because they were entertaining. Especially the Prince story. The reason I told that story wasn’t to show what a maniac I am. It was more to show that I will stop at nothing to start my career. • Read full story…

Rihanna is bringing her Last Girl on Earth Tour to Madison Square Garden on Thursday night (August 12), and that means opening act Ke$ha is feeling particularly nervous. Why? Well, it’s Madison Square Garden!

“I’m actually a little petrified, to be honest. It’s a landmark in my career, and it’s just an epic venue. … I’m just really excited, and I’m gonna try to kill it!” she told MTV News. “It definitely means a lot for me to be playing there, especially with Rihanna, ’cause she’s so incredible. It makes me feel like I’m finally arriving here!”

The girls kicked off the tour earlier this summer, and the “Tik Tok” singer said she and Rihanna have had some fun times on the road together. “It’s amazing! She’s just a badass,” she said. “I saw her yesterday, and she spanked me — always keeping me on my toes. She’s the sickest.” • Read full story…
